Maldives Tour Guide

The Maldives is a nation of islands in the Indian Ocean, that spans across the equator. The country is comprised of 1192 islands that stretch along a length of 871 kilometers. While the country covers an area of approximately 90,000 square kilometers, only 298 square kilometers of that is dry land. The islands are grouped into a double chain of 26 atolls.

The country’s unique geography mesmerizes the visitor. Reefs that offer bands of color, tiny jewel-like islands rimmed with the whitest of soft sand surrounded by the clearest shallow waters that one can imagine. Only 200 of the islands are inhabited, and a select few on each of the atolls are resorts and some of the islands are used for industry and agriculture.

The beauty of the Maldives is not only above the water. The Maldives is home to about five percent of the planet’s reefs that comes with an explosion of color contributed by soft and hard corals that form them. The reefs are home to a thousand species of fish. Lured by the rich nutrients that flow in with the currents, large pelagic fishes such as manta rays and whale sharks also make the Maldives their home.

These islands have a lot to offer in terms of places to visit in Maldives. While many people feel that the whole idea of a Maldives trip is to just relax in their island resort and do nothing, here are our suggestions of places to visit in Maldives should you feel like stirring out!

Sights of Male City:

Male excursions are organized regularly by resorts in Male Atoll, however some resorts in other atolls would also offer you the opportunity to take a Male excursion during your stay.

Hukuru Miskiiy: Hukuru Miskiiy or Friday Mosque is a 17th century mosque and a fine example of Maldivian workmanship. The ornate mosque has walls built of finely carved coral blocks, and its interiors are intricately carved. It is one of the most famous places to visit in Maldives.

Theemuge Palace:  The Theemuge Palace is the erstwhile Presidential Palace of Male and one of the grandest buildings in the town. In 2008 the location of the President’s Residence was shifted and this Palace was converted into the Supreme Court of Maldives. It is still a popular place for tourists on a Maldives tour package to visit for photographs. National Museum: This was the first National Museum in Maldives, and was established in 1952. The old building was extensively damaged in a fire, and a new building was constructed and opened to the public in 2010. It is one of the major Maldives tourist places even today. The Museum displays a variety of artefacts covering the history of the region, from the ancient Buddhist period onwards. The museum showcases the rich culture and heritage of Maldives.

Fish Market: One of the most exciting places to visit in Malé is the Fish Market. The market really comes to life in the afternoon when dhonis, or the local fishing boats start arriving with their catch. Maldivians buy fresh fish for their homes every day and a visit to the fish market is part of the day’s program for many.

Local Market: A little further to the west of the fish market is the aptly named Local Market. The market consists of a series of stalls that stock the produce of islands from all over the Maldives. This is the place to be if you wish to sample some of the local fruits or preserves. This is one of the cool places to visit in Maldives to understand the local culture.

Artificial Beach:  Oddly enough, for a country known for its beaches, the residents of Malé actually get to enjoy an artificial beach on the eastern side of the island. The beach is ideal for swimmers and those who cannot go to the nearby islands to enjoy a beach. There are a variety of eateries in the area, and benches where people can sit down and enjoy the scenery. This is one of the Maldives tourist places that is great for families.

The best time to visit the Maldives is from Dec to Apr when the island encounters a dry climate with next to zero downpour showers, making it the pinnacle vacationer season here. The long stretches of May to Aug see substantial precipitation and can be kept away from. In any case, those searching for large discounts can make a beeline for the Maldives during this time. Getting around the Maldives

You will find that almost all roads are one-ways, many buildings are multi-story and quite narrow, roads are also as narrow as they get. People use bikes or cycles mainly, although you will find a lot of cars around.

Travel in the Maldives takes place in three ways – boats, sea planes (air taxis), and private yachts. Boats are the Maldivian equivalent of a car while planes and private yachts are mainly for tourists. In Male and the other larger inhabited islands, you can call a taxi to get around the island.

The best way to get around the resort islands is by foot, but most resorts also have golf buggies which their staff is always happy and drive you around. A round-the-clock ferry service operates between the capital and the airport. Permits are not necessary for the organized island-hopping tours arranged by resorts, but independent travel to inhabited islands other than Male would require an Inter Atoll Travel Permit from the Ministry of Atolls.

The only places where visitors will need to travel by road are Male and the Southernmost atoll, Addu. Taxis are available in both places and driving is on the left-hand side.
